How long have you been interested in Radio?
Since I heard Radio Caroline back in 1966
What radio experience have you had?
Worked in hospital radio in Coventry and Bath for 17 years. First professional
job in radio at Radio West (later GWR) in Bristol in 1982. Later worked
on Severn Sound, CCR in Ireland, BBC Radio Gloucestershire and others.
Then set up an RSL station in Stroud called Easy FM, which ran for
just over five years. This was awarded a full time licence in 1998,
going or air as FM107 – The Falcon, which I ran as Managing Director
until 2001. I presented the top rated mid day show on that station
and my roots music show – The Crooked Road. I was also chair
of the BBC local radio advisory council for Gloucestershire. In addition
I work as a programming consultant to a number of commercial radio
stations in Ireland and we have a house in County Mayo.
How did you get involved in Swindon FM?
I picked up a flyer in the chip shop at the Link Centre, got in touch
with Ray Butt and the rest as they say is history. I’ve also
known Carl Humphries and some of the other presenters from my days
at The Falcon. Carl and Jean Goodall did some work for me there,
What do you think you bring to the station?
Obviously an in depth knowledge of running a small commercial radio station
and winning a licence for an FM frequency. As I mentioned above I’ve
been a day time presenter on several stations and I’m more than
willing to help out and advise other station workers where I can.
What sort of music do you like?
Silly question! Roots, world and country. For examples listen to The
Crooked Road, every Sunday afternoon 4 to 6 on Swindon FM! The programme
is now in its seventh year by the way.
Why?
Just listen to the music and it will tell you itself. Its real music,
performed by real people, who have grown up with it. Its soul music!
