About Swindon FM - The Concept

Swindon FM was born out of a very real and genuine passion for a local Swindon radio. It was well over 10 years ago, and whilst Chairman of Swindon Town Football Club, that Rikki Hunt first identified the need for a local station. More recently, and together with Ray Butt, it was whilst driving forward the Swindon Jazz Festival this initial concept became a reality. Sean McHugh then joined them. He is a radio consultant working with a variety of UK radio companies, along with other founders.

Our target audience is 25 years plus, and previous research has shown that it is not unusual for a radio station running on a temporary licence to reach 20% of the population in the broadcast area. This is normally equal to local newspaper distribution. In Swindon this equates to approximately 36,000 people. Based on our market research we have devised a programme format similar to many successful local stations, yet maintaining a totally unique style and character for Swindon. The music is based around classic, melodic tracks and we are focussing on using presenters that are local to Swindon. Added to this we will have creative programming with an authentic local voice, reflecting the particular interests of the Swindon residents, such as the local Jazz scene. Other specialist shows will include Blues, Soul and Country & Western.

The overall focus for the Swindon FM team is to gain a full licence. A second temporary broadcast took place in June and July 2002 to refine our programme format, presentation, style and assist with ongoing market research.

In addition, Swindon FM is now availible the NOW Digital Swindon multiplex and on the internet at www.swindonfm.co.uk 7 days a week from 6am until 10pm.
